I've spent four wonderful years at Florida State University, not only immersed in academics, working my way toward a dual degree in Communications and Sports Management, but also totally involved with all the various sports activities and the corresponding reporting venues that support them.
I've been very lucky. FSU offers state-of-the-art communications facilities, along with a top-tier faculty and exceptional sports programs and coaching staffs. CBS Sports (and the National Association of College Directors of Athletics - NACDA) voted FSU the "Best College in Sports for 2016-17." Located in Florida's capital, we also find ourselves constantly at the center of various social events and mainstream political demonstrations. Each week seems to overflow with news swirling around our sports programs or our government officials - offering us a great opportunity to collect, analyze and disseminate stories through "regular" reporting channels as well as the new digital world's social media outlets.
In reporting these issues we have found ourselves, on occasion, facing real life formative issues that have instantly exploded onto the national scene. And at times during our four years the university itself has even become national news.
Right from the start our freshmen year was interrupted by an on-campus shooter. Over the past years I have covered: the death of a FSU fraternity student attributed to binge drinking, hurricane Irma rolling into the Florida panhandle, campus reaction at the University of Florida to the speech of a white supremacist, protests at Senator Marco Rubio's office, pro- and anti- gun demonstrations at the capital in response to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, the progress Puerto Rico has made since hurricane Maria, and our school's response to a New York Times, Pulitzer-winning reporter's allegation of student athlete favoritism at FSU. This latter story was submitted by FSU to the Associated Press for their yearly collegiate award. These experiences have truly educated me with valuable, down-to-earth lessons in the real world of "breaking news." I wouldn't have wanted it any other way.
